Dear Parent/Guardian,
Happy New Year to all!  Welcome back to school and the beginning of a new year.  This is the first day of school in the 2009 New Year and I hope we all make it the start of something big.  As with all New Year’s celebrations, I hope we can all take time to make some resolutions.  Let us resolve to be at school every day on time.  Let us resolve to do our best on every assignment.  Let us resolve to get along with others and make Durkin park an enjoyable place to be.  Let us resolve to improve our ISAT scores by at least 10%.  Let us resolve to become successful, kind people this entire New Year.

 I would like to thank all the parents who worked so hard to put together our Coffee and Cookie get together before the break.  It was a great success.  It is people like these parents who make Durkin Park such a wonderful place.  Don’t forget to check our webpage to see what is going on here at Durkin Park.    If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact the school at 535-2322.

 ¡Feliz Año Nuevo a todos!  Bienvenidos de vuelta a la escuela y el comienzo de un nuevo año. Este es el primer día de escuela del año 2009 y espero que todos lo conviertan en el comienzo de algo grande.  Como ocurre con todas las celebraciones de Año Nuevo, espero que todos podamos tener tiempo para hacer algunas resoluciones.  Vamos a proponernos llegar a la escuela a tiempo todos los días. Vamos a proponernos hacer lo mejor posible en cada asignación. Vamos a proponernos llevarnos bien con los demás y hacer de Durkin Park un lugar agradable. Vamos a proponernos  mejorar los resultados de los exámenes ISAT al menos en un 10%. Vamos a proponernos ser buenas y exitosas personas todo el Año Nuevo.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Parent Advisory Committee and the safety Patrol Staff have made some changes to the drop off procedures.  Since the weather has gotten colder, students won’t be lining up outside.  The new procedure is as follows:

    1 – All students should be dropped off in the front of the school at the main entrance on the East side of Kolin.  They should enter through the main entrance and then proceed to their designated areas.  Hall monitors will help them if they should need guidance on where they should report.

   2 – Enter Kolin at 85^th Street and drive North towards 84^th Street.  Please do not drive South when dropping off students.  We are trying to create a one way traffic flow to move things along more quickly.  Students should exit the vehicle on the East curb side of Kolin.

   3 - All vehicles should remain in a single file line when stopping to let children out.  Please do not go around the cars in front of you.  If everyone stops for only a moment and then leaves the traffic should move quickly.

    4 – Leave room for the school bus that brings students to school every morning.  If you see the bus coming do not stop in that space.

   5 – Make sure your child has safely left the vehicle before you pull away from the curb.  There have been some near accidents when a child hasn’t stepped away from the car or has dropped something on the ground.

   6 – The parking restrictions remain the same.  From 8:30 – 9:00 there is no parking on 84^th and Kolin and on the North side of 85^th Street, East of Kolin.  These restrictions help to maintain the traffic flow in the mornings.  Only residents of Kolin are allowed to park on this block.  Teachers and staff have special permits for parking.  Do not park in the teacher’s parking lot. 

We appreciate everyone who is respectful and cooperative with the patrol guards and the parent volunteers.  Our goal is to keep all our children safe as they come to school.  We must continue to work together to reach this goal.  The PAC is still in need of more volunteers to patrol around the mobile classrooms in the rear of the school.  It only takes twenty minutes before or after school to walk around the buildings making sure our students are safe.  If you are interested in helping, please leave your name and phone number in the office.

Estimado Padre o Tutor,

El Comité Asesor de Padres (PAC) y los miembros de la Patrulla De Seguridad han hecho algunos cambios a los procedimientos de la hora de entrada.  Debido a que la temperatura se ha puesto muy fría, los estudiantes no se formaran afuera.  El nuevo procedimiento es el siguiente:

     1 - Todos los estudiantes deben ser dejados en el frente de la escuela en la entrada principal por el lado este de la Calle Kolin.  Deberán entrar por la entrada principal y proceder a sus áreas designadas.  Los monitores de los pasillos les ayudarán si necesitan orientación.
    2 – Entre a la Kolin por la Calle 85 y conduzca en dirección al norte hacia la Calle 84.  Por favor no maneje hacia el Sur cuando deje a sus niños.  Estamos tratando de que la calle vaya hacia una sola dirección para que el trafico se mueva mas rápido.  Los estudiantes deberán salir del vehículo por el lado este de la banqueta en la Calle Kolin.
    3 - Todos los vehículos deben permanecer en una sola línea al parar y bajar a sus niños.   Por favor no pase a los carros  delante de usted.  Si todos se detienen sólo un momento para dejar a sus niños y luego se van, el tráfico se moverá con rapidez.
     4 - Deje espacio para el autobús escolar que deja a los niños por las mañanas.  Si ve venir el autobús, no se detenga en ese espacio.
    5 - Asegúrese bien de que su niño se ha bajado del vehiculo de una manera segura  antes arrancar y retirarse de la banqueta.  Se han producido accidentes cuando los niños no se alejan del carro o se paran a recoger algo del piso.
    6 - Las restricciones de estacionamiento siguen siendo las mismas.  De 8:30 - 9:00 no hay estacionamiento en las Calles 84 y Kolin y en la parte norte de la Calle 85, al este de la Kolin. Estas restricciones ayudan a mantener el flujo de tráfico en las mañanas.  Sólo a los residentes de la Kolin se les permite estacionarse en esa cuadra.  Los profesores y el personal tienen permisos especiales para estacionarse.  No se estacione en el estacionamiento de los maestros.

Agradecemos a todos los que muestran respeto y cooperación hacia la patrulla de guardias y a los padres voluntarios.  Nuestro objetivo es mantener a todos nuestros niños seguros al venir a la escuela.  Debemos seguir trabajando juntos para alcanzar esta meta.  El PAC todavía necesita de voluntarios para patrullar alrededor de las aulas móviles en la parte trasera de la escuela.  Sólo se toman veinte minutos antes o después de la escuela para caminar alrededor de los edificios y asegurarse de  que nuestros estudiantes están a salvo.  Si usted está interesado en ayudar, por favor deje su nombre y número de teléfono en la oficina.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Just wanted to remind everyone that the 1^st Quarter ends on November 7, 2008  That is a non attendance day for students.  Monday, November 10^th is a Teacher Institute Day and a non attendance day for students.  Tuesday, November 11^th is Veteran’s Day Holiday and there is no school that day.  Wednesday, November 12^th is Report Card Pick Up Day for all Elementary Schools.  This, too, is a non attendance day for students but they are welcome to come with their parents to pick up their report cards.  The school will be open from 12:00 to 3:00 and then again from 4:00 to 6:00.  Please come up to school that day to pick up your child’s report card and meet with their teacher.

This Thursday, October 30, the Parent Advisory Commeettee (PAC) will meet at 9:15 a.m. and the Local School Council (LSC) will meet at 3:30 p.m in room 121.  Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings.

This Friday is Halloween.  Students in Kindergarten, 1^st and 2^nd Grades may wear costumes (no accessories to the costume that would look like weapons are allowed).  No other students may wear any costumes of any kind.  Please take the time that day to make sure your children are involved in safe activities.  We advise they trick-or-treat with adult supervision or in a group.  Let’s make this a safe experience for all the children.  If you would prefer your child not participate in Halloween activities planned by the classroom teacher we ask that you write the teacher a note so that we can make other arrangements for your child during that time.  Have a safe and happy weekend.

Estimado Padre o Tutor,

Solo quería recordarles que el primer período escolar terminará el 7 de noviembre del 2008.  Ese día no habrá clases para los estudiantes.  El lunes, 10 de noviembre es el día de Instituto de Maestros y  el martes, 11 de noviembre, se festeja el Día de los Veteranos, así que no habrá clases ninguno de esos días.  El día 12 de noviembre tampoco habrá clases debido a que es el día de la entrega de calificaciones de todas las escuelas elementales, pero sus niños son bienvenidos a acompañarlos a recoger las calificaciones.  La escuela estará abierta de 12:00 a 3:00 de la tarde y de 4:00 a 6:00 de la tarde.  Por favor venga a la escuela a recoger las calificaciones de sus niños y a reunirse con sus maestros.

Este jueves, 30 de octubre,  el Comité Asesor de Padres (PAC) tendrá su reunión a las 9:15 a.m. y el Concilio Local Escolar (LSC) tendrá su reunión a las 3:30 p.m. en el salón 121.  Todos son bienvenidos a estas reuniones.

Este viernes es el dia de las brujas (Halloween).  Los estudiantes de Kinder, 1ro y 2do grado podrán usar disfraces (no se les permiten accesorios que puedan parecer armas).  A ningún estudiante de ningún otro grado se le permitirá usar disfraz de ninguna clase.  Por favor tómese tiempo ese día para asegurarse de que sus niños estén envueltos en actividades que sean seguras.   Le recomendamos que pidan los dulces en compañía y supervisión de un adulto o en grupo.  Hay que hacer de este festejo una experiencia segura para todos los niños.  Si prefiere que su niño no tome parte de las actividades planeadas en el salón, le pedimos que le escriba una nota al maestro para que podamos hacer arreglos para su niño durante esos festejos.  Que pase un feliz y seguro fin de semana.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope this note finds everyone doing well and enjoying the change of seasons.  We are busy here at Durkin Park Elementary with the start of the Early Riser and Saturday Academy Programs this week.  Things have begun well and we expect them to continue to improve as we move forward throughout the year.  As we settle in for the coming Fall and Winter months I want to thank everyone for their hard work and tireless effort on starting another new school year.  I would also like to thank all the parent volunteers who work daily to help the school run smoothly.  Without you all we couldn’t achieve what we achieve here daily.  Thank you for being so generous with your time and talents.

Don’t forget that the students do not have school this Friday, October 24, 2008.  The teachers will be participating in Professional Development activities all day.  Please remember to pay your student fee if you have not all ready done so.

 Estimado Padre o Tutor,

 Espero que se encuentre bien y disfrutando de este cambio de estación.  Estamos muy ocupados esta  semana en la Escuela Durkin Park con el comienzo de los programas Antes de la Escuela y la Academia Sabatina.  Todo ha comenzado bien y esperamos continuar mejorando al avanzar el año.  Al ajustarnos a los meses de otoño e invierno quiero agradecer a todos por su arduo trabajo y esfuerzo incansable al comienzo del año escolar.  También me gustaría agradecer a todos los padres voluntarios que trabajan diariamente para que la escuela corra sin problemas.  Sin ustedes no podríamos hacer lo que logramos diariamente.   Gracias por ser tan generosos con su tiempo y por aportar sus talentos.

 No se le olvide que los estudiantes no tendrán clases el viernes, 24 de octubre del 2008.  Los maestros estarán participando en un Día de Desarrollo Profesional durante todo el día.  Por favor recuerde pagar su cuota estudiantil si no lo ha hecho.
