Greetings Durkin Park Families,

This week’s updates can be found below.

McTeacher Night

• Please come out and support our 8th grade class!
• Visit the McDonalds at 91st and Cicero, make sure to tell them you are with Durkin Park.
• Durkin Park receive a percentage of all sales and 100% of all apple pie sales

Read-a-thon

• Durkin Park Elementary School is hosting a Read-a-Thon to support our School Library. A Read-a-Thon is an educational fundraiser that promotes literacy, healthy habits, and teamwork, all while supporting our school!
• The goal of the 2024 Read-a-Thon is to raise $20,000, which will purchase approximately 1000 new library books.
• Our Bulldogs have voted- they are excited to add graphic novels, Spanish language/bilingual books, and how-to books, and sports non-fiction to our library collection!
• Please review this letter on additional ways we need parents to support the Read-a-thon.

Father-Daughter Dance

• Tickets to this year’s father-daughter dance can be purchased on the Durkin Park website, student fees section, starting tomorrow, 4/11/24.
• The dance will cost $20 per family, families only need to purchase one ticket for both the father and daughter attendees.
• This year’s theme is: I Love The 80s.

PreK Applications

• Are you a Chicago resident with a preschool-aged child? The preschool application process is
  now open. You can access the application at, www.cps.edu/chicagoearlylearning, or call
  312-229-1690 to apply. Our 3-year-old program offers half-day sessions, either in the morning
  from 8:00 am to 10:30 am or in the afternoon from 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm. For 4-year-olds, we offer
  a full-day program from 7:45 am to 2:35 pm. If you have any further inquiries about the preschool
  program, please feel free to email Erin O'Neill at [email protected].

Parent Workshops

• The Durkin Park Parent Advisory Council and Bilingual Advisory Committee have sponsored a series of parent workshops open to all Durkin Park parents.
• The workshop topics are as follows:
  • 4/11- Time Management to Reduce Stress
  • 4/17- Responsible and Successful Children
  • 4/24- Family Communication
  • 5/1 Academic and Socioemotional Support
  • 5/8 -Android, Apple: How your information is used
  • 5/15- Handheld devices: A computer at your fingertips
  • 5/22- Your personal information on the internet
  • 5/29- Watercolor painting 1
  • 5/30- Watercolor painting 2
  • 5/31- Watercolor painting 3
  • 6/5- Google 101: Google Drive
• All workshops begin at 9AM in the multipurpose room
• Workshops available in English and Spanish

OST After School Programs

• Spring programs begin April 8th and end by May 30th.
• Programs are contingent upon student enrollment.
• OST Space available for:
  • Spring Lil Bulldogs (8 spaces available)
    • Saturday dates are: April 6, April 13, April 20, April 27, May 4, May 11, May 18.
  • Arabic Dance (5th-8th Grade) Mon & Wed 3:00-4:00 PM.
  • Conversational Spanish (1st-5th) Tues & Thurs 3:00-4:00 PM.
  • Poetry Club (3rd-5th Grade) Tues & Thurs 3:00-4:00 PM.
  • Chicas Club (5th & 6th Grade) Wed 3:00-4:00 PM

Bulldog Hour

• On April 12th, 19th and 26th Durkin Park will be piloting a new initiative called Bulldog Hour.
• On the dates listed above there will be a modified school schedule that allows students in 6th-8th grade receive instruction in their core and exploratory classes and engage in a non-academic club of their choice.
• Clubs will be run by 6th-8th grade teachers.
• Club offerings are varied but range from yoga to board games.
• The goals of Bulldog Hour is to improve student-teacher relational trust, increase Friday attendance in middle school, and spread joy amongst students..

School Uniforms

• Sweatshirts have been delivered and can be ordered here.
• Durkin Park sweatshirts are the only top layer permitted by the uniform policy. Students will be asked to remove non-Durkin Park sweatshirts, hoodies, sweaters and jackets. 
• Out of uniform dates will be communicated to parents by administration.

School Events:

• Durkin Park has several regularly scheduled meetings that provide parents an opportunity to stay informed as well as provide feedback on school matters. Please mark your calendars for the following:
  • Durkin Park Local School Council: April 18th 3:30 PM, May 30th 3:30 PM
  • Durkin Park PAC/BAC: May 5th 8:15 AM.
  • Father-Daughter Dance: April 26th 5, 4:00 PM Theme: I Love The 80s

Danza Padre-Hija

Aplicaciones de preescolar

• ¿Es usted residente de Chicago y tiene un niño en edad preescolar? El proceso de solicitud de

Programas extracurriculares OST

• Los programas de primavera comienzan el 8 de abril y finalizan el 30 de mayo.
• Los programas dependen de la inscripción de los estudiantes.
• OST Espacio disponible para:
  • Spring Lil Bulldogs (8 espacios disponibles)
    • Las fechas de los sábados son: 6 de abril, 13 de abril, 20 de abril, 27 de abril, 4 de mayo, 11 de mayo, 18 de mayo.
  • árabe (grados 5.o a 8.o) lunes y miércoles de 3:00 a 4:00 p. m.
  • Español conversacional (1.° a 5.°) martes y jueves de 3:00 a 4:00 p. m.
  • Club de poesía (3.° a 5.° grado) martes y jueves de 3:00 a 4:00 p. m.
  • Chicas Club (5to y 6to grado) Miércoles 3:00-4:00 p.m.

Hora del Bulldog

• Los días 12, 19 y 26 de abril, Durkin Park pondrá a prueba una nueva iniciativa llamada Hora de Bulldog.
• En las fechas mencionadas anteriormente habrá un horario escolar modificado que permitirá a los estudiantes de 6o a 8o grado recibir instrucción en sus clases básicas y exploratorias y participar en un club no académico de su elección.
• Los clubes estarán dirigidos por maestros de 6o a 8o grado.
• Las ofertas del club son variadas, desde yoga hasta juegos de mesa.
• Los objetivos de Hora de Bulldog son para mejorar la confianza relacional entre estudiantes y maestros, aumentar la asistencia los viernes de los estudiantes en 6o a 8o grado y difundir la alegría entre los estudiantes.

Evaluación de ciencias de Illinois

• Padres de estudiantes de 5.o y 8.o grado, tómense un momento para revisar esta carta sobre el examen ISA.

​Uniformes escolares

• Las sudaderas han sido entregadas y se pueden pedir aquí.
• Las sudaderas de Durkin Park son el único suéter permitido por la política de uniformes. Se
  pedirá a los estudiantes que se quiten las sudaderas, sudaderas con gorra, suéteres y chaquetas
  que no sean de Durkin Park.
• Las fechas sin uniforme serán comunicadas a los padres por la administración.

Eventos escolares:

• Durkin Park tiene varias reuniones programadas regularmente que brindan a los padres la oportunidad de mantenerse informados y brindar comentarios sobre asuntos escolares. Por favor marque sus calendarios para lo siguiente:
